Video games for the easily nauseated

I’ve had some requests for video game suggestions for people who experience motion sickness like I do, so I’ve compiled a short list of games that might interest you sicklings out there. This is largely based on my Steam library so a lot of them are going to be PC games. Definitely hit me up if you need any information on these (system compatibility, pricing, etc.) or want to know my personal experience with them aside from having a good time.

Adventure is out there!

  • Diablo III (If you’re up on your memes, you probably know that this game just came out and it’s a BFD)

    found on digitaltrends.com

  • Plants vs Zombies
  • Alice: Madness Returns
  • Worms (Armageddon and Reloaded)
  • Dracula: Origins
  • Tekken
  • Luxor
  • The Secret of Monkey Island
  • Sherlock Holmes (I liked Awakened and Nemesis best I think)
  • Sid Meier’s Pirates

Evidently she wasn’t impressed with his sword.

  • Peggle, Droplitz, Cogs, Shatter, etc. (these are just silly little arcade/puzzle games)
  • Clones
  • Nancy Drew (I’m on the advisory panel for HerInteractive, so I’m a bit biased here. They’re great games for young girls though.)
  • Sam & Max
  • Trine
  • Limbo
  • Nightsky
  • Any of the Tycoon games (i.e. Rollercoaster Tycoon)
  • Batman: Arkham City (this one is surprising, but if I only play for like an hour at a time or so, I’m fine)

    found on gameinformer.com

  • Bioshock (also surprising but I didn’t have trouble playing or watching someone else play)
  • Portal 2 (again, easy does it and you should be okay)
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds
  • Hoard
  • Magicka
  • Soul Calibur 4
  • Super Mario World
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • Mortal Kombat

    found on topfreedownloadgames.blogspot.com

And of course there are a ton of flash games you can play that won’t make you sick. I like Tetris, Scrabble Blast, etc.

I’m looking forward to trying the new Game of Thrones, as well as Walking Dead. I hope that I can stomach them even though they’re first person. We’ll see. I heard Game of Thrones was crap, but I have enjoyed it in the other mediums so I probably won’t be able to resist at least trying.

Happy gaming!

  2. I just wanted to say thank you for posting this. I’ve been running my blog and devoting my energies to promoting accessibility in video games. Often times I focus on visual, hearing impaired, and motion impaired issues within gaming. I didn’t expect to learn about issues with motion sickness within gaming, but now that you’ve shown me that motion sickness is an issue I’ll be keeping a closer eye on this going forward.

Thanks again! If you have any more opinions on the gaming universe I’d love to read them.

    • What a nice comment. I’ve struggled with motion sickness my whole life and it’s really frustrating when you can’t play the games or watch the movies you’re interested in. I will make more video game posts in the future and hopefully some of my rambling will be interesting to you. I’m currently working through Diablo III on Nightmare difficulty, as well as The Walking Dead and other little games here and there. Thank you for stopping by!

Have you tried The Cave? My wife and I have had a lot of fun with that one coop, definitely worth checking out.

    • No, I haven’t even heard of it. Thank you for the recommendation! I love any game that A) doesn’t make me sick and B) I can play with my husband.

It’s a cleverly designed environmental puzzle game by Double Fine who did Psychonaughts and Brutal Legend(errrg). I’m not sure what type of games activate motion sickness, but this one shouldnt, its a 2.5D side(+up/down) scroller, without a lot of fast moving objects or effects. Very visually appealing. And it’s on Steam, XBox & PS3.. Definitely let me know what you think of it if you check it out. We got like 3/4 the way through the game and then lost our game saves on the PS3 after a patch though, so watch out for that.

      • If I get a chance to try it out I will definitely let you know what I think. It sounds awesome.

Oh and I hate when you lose game progress because of a patch/crash/etc. That is the worst. It took me forever to return to Alice: Madness Returns after losing about 75% of my progress TWICE. Grrrr!
